Gardening in Corvallis, Oregon

Flower gardens are a relatively late addition to the West Coast. Settled by European immigrants later than most of the country, early journals use garden and vegetables (and occasionally fruit like gooseberries) synonymously. Even the fruit and vegetable gardens were late to develop, as the available land was planted in the cash crop wheat. In time, however, flowers came to be planted, because they were viewed as indispensable at weddings and funerals, and hard to procure from native plants except in late spring or summer. Among the flowers were tomatoes, regard as inedible but admired for the color they added to a garden although they " were fenced securely away from the children because they were believed to be poison".
