An account of the first person ever killed with the Electric chair:

Kemmler was convicted of murdering his girlfriend, Tillie Ziegler, with an axe.His case became a full-fledged legal battle when millionaire entrepreneur George Westinghouse took up his case and hired the best lawyers in the country to take it all the way to the Supreme Court.
Kemmler's execution was botched when one of the attending physicians ordered the current turned off too soon. When it was turned back on it was left on so long that Kemmler's flesh burned, filling the execution chamber with the smell of burning meat. One of the witnesses fainted and several predicted that the experiment had been such a failure it would never be used again. The next year, however, New York killed four more people on the same day.

For the variant views of religious figures, click here.
"An execution is not simply death. It is just as different from the privation of life as a concentration camp is from prison. It adds to death a rule, a public premeditation known to the future victim, an organization which is itself a source of moral sufferings more terrible than death. Capital punishment is the most premeditated of murders, to which no criminal's deed, however calculated can be compared. For there to be an equivalency, the death penalty would have to punish a criminal who had warned his victim of the date at which he would inflict a horrible death on him and who, from that moment onward, had confined him at his mercy for months. Such a monster is not encountered in private life." Albert Camus

Source: Death Penalty Information Center (The drop in the 70's occurred when the pre-Reagan Supreme Court declared the death penalty, as practiced, to be unconstitutional.)
From the Pro-death penalty site ProDeathPenalty.com:
"If we execute murderers and there is in fact no deterrent effect, we have killed a bunch of murderers. If we fail to execute murderers, and doing so would in fact have deterred other murders, we have allowed the killing of a bunch of innocent victims. I would much rather risk the former. This, to me, is not a tough call."
From the anti-death penalty site Catholic Standard:
"The popularity of the death penalty reflects the growing "culture of death" in our country and in our world, as people seek to solve problems by destroying human life..."
